FC Sheriff Tiraspol

Futbol Club Sheriff Tiraspol (Russian Шериф Тирасполь, also under the name " Serif Tiraspol " known ) is a football club based in Tiraspol, Transnistria. He plays in Divizia Naţională, the highest football league in Moldova, and is their current record holder.

History

The club was founded in 1996 under the name Tiras Tiraspol. The game mode was added to the Divizia B, the third- highest division of the country. Right away promotion to the second-class Divizia A and the club started the season under the new name Sheriff Tiraspol. With 21 points ahead of Energhetic Dubasari who occupied the relegation place was the team from Tiraspol second division champions and managed to march through in the Moldovan football upper house, the Divizia Naţională.

In the first division Sheriff Tiraspol reached in his first season in 1998/99 and took fourth place with a 2-1 success after extra Constructorul Chisinau with the cup win his first title. A year later, the club was one point behind runner-up behind Zimbru Chisinau. 2001 to 2010 the club was then ten times in a row Moldovan national champion. In addition, with victories against Nistru Otaci succeeded in 2001 and 2002 respectively winning the cup. 2004 was sheriff again in the cup final, but was beaten Zimbru Chisinau 1-2. Again against Nistru Otaci succeeded in 2006 with a 2-0 win, the fourth win of the Moldovan Cup. This could finally be won in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

In the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League 2008 / 09, the Kazakh champions FK Aktobe was defeated with 0:1 and 4:0. Then the team against Sparta Prague was eliminated.

In the 2009/10 season, the team pressed forward to the play- offs for the UEFA Champions League. There, Sheriff Tiraspol failed because of the Greek club Olympiakos Piraeus ( 0:2 and 0:1). Thus the first-time participation in the group stage of the Champions League was indeed missed, but he managed the initial qualification for the group stage of the newly-created UEFA Europa League. This is the first Moldovan club Sheriff, who moved into the group stage of a UEFA competition. This was achieved after a win against FC Twente Enschede and two draws against Steaua Bucharest, the third group space, as a result of the FC Sheriff Tiraspol was eliminated from further competition. Nevertheless, this is cutting the biggest success at the international level of the club and also on all of the Moldovan Association dar. In the 2010/11 season, FC Sheriff again qualified for the Europa League by the Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, qualification ausschaltete, but then drew the short straw in the playoffs against FC Basel.

The club plays its home matches at the 14,300 -seater Sheriff Stadium, which was built in 2002.
