FC United of Manchester

The Football Club United of Manchester, FC United briefly, FCUM or colloquially called Red Rebels, is an English football club based in Manchester. The club was founded by fans of Manchester United, which thus turned against the takeover of the club by Malcolm Glazer and against the commercialization of football.

History

Association was founded

The FC United was founded in summer 2005 by disappointed fans of Manchester United. Although there were different reasons for starting their own association, the takeover of Manchester United by the American businessman Malcolm Glazer was the real reason. As early as 1998 there were plans for setting up their own club, as Rupert Murdoch wanted to take over Manchester United. Since this purchase did not materialize, the plans were shelved down. After the takeover by Glazer, the idea was again brought out and discussed in various fanzines.

On 12 May 2005, Glazer took control of Manchester United. The fans, who had opposed the Glazer takeover, organized a meeting on 19 May 2005 in Manchester Methodist Hall. During this meeting, the chairman of the meeting, Andy Walsh announced that at a meeting held on 30 May 2005, the establishment of a new association should be discussed. Walsh was advised by the then President of AFC Wimbledon Kris Stewart, a well established in the year 2002 by fans club. It was decided then to found a new club, when at least 1,000 people by the end of July 2005 did a financial donation.

Membership and Board
