The FCM Targoviste was founded in 1950 under the name of Energia Targoviste. In the season 1956, the club played its first match in the national Divizia C. After he had changed his name in 1957 in Metalul Targoviste, succeeded in 1959, the jump in the second highest league, which Divizia B. Also this League was merely a transit station in rise of Metalul. Just two years later Metalul managed to march through and played in the 1961/62 season in Divizia A.

This success was once for more than 15 years, because Metalul rose immediately off again and even had to take the course in the Divizia C in 1967. From 1969 to 1977, the club was again at the Divizia B, in 1972 the club name was changed in CS Targoviste (on German Sports Club Targoviste ). In the late 1970s and early 1980s was followed by the most successful period of CS. Between 1977 and 1984 the club was a member except for a brief interruption of the Divizia A, but played it mostly against relegation. In the 1978/79 season was ever reached with the seventh place, the best ever placement.

After the descent CS could not build on his earlier years and had in 1992 again take the course in the Divizia C. In the 1990s, the association developed to lift the team. During the change of name in Oţelul Targoviste (on German steel Targoviste ) in 1994 first ascent in the Divizia B and a year later the walkover succeeded, followed shortly afterwards - from 1996 under the name CF Chindia Targoviste - the reverse way: In 2000 rose from Chindia in the Divizia C.

After the re-emergence in 2003, the Association changed its name to the still valid FC Municipal Targoviste ( in German Town Football Club Targoviste ). In summer 2004, a few days before the start of the second division season 2004/ 05, the heavily indebted club stood immediately before its dissolution and expulsion from league play. On 19 August 2004, the businessman Ghiorghi Zotic took over the leadership of the club, paid the debts to former players and coaches and committed within 16 hours the coach Marin Olteanu and 12 players from the third division Alpan Universitatea Targoviste. After an unsuccessful start to the 2008/ 09 season Ion Constantin was degraded on 2 September 2008 for assistant coach of Petre Gigiu. However, this was dismissed eight game days later and Ion Constantin returned end of October 2008 to the away game at Universitatea Cluj as head coach back.
