FIFA U-20 World Cup

The FIFA U- 20 World Cup (formerly the FIFA World Youth Championship) or only briefly U20 World Championship (English: FIFA U -20 World Cup), named, is the football competition between the best national teams for male soccer players under 20.

The tournament takes place every two years and is organized by the world football governing body FIFA. For many well-known football player and World Champion Junior World Championship was the springboard to the international stage of football. How could, for example, players such as the Argentinian Diego Maradona (1979 ), Juan Roman Riquelme (1997 ), Javier Saviola ( 2001), Lionel Messi ( 2005) and Sergio Aguero (2007), the Brazilians Bebeto (1983) and Adriano ( 2001), (1997) make the Croatians Davor Šuker and Robert Prosinečki (1987 ), the Portuguese Luís Figo, Rui Costa and Joao Pinto ( 1991), Frenchman David Trezeguet or the Spaniard Iker Casillas ( 1999) first noticed.

The first time was the U -20 World Cup in 1977 in Tunisia held and was won by the team of the USSR. The national team of Argentina leads the world champion statistics of the U-20 teams with six titles. The finals in 1991 in Lisbon saw 120,000 spectators; this was the highest number of audience that has ever been achieved in a U-20 game.

Awards

At the end of each U- 20 World Cup, several awards will be awarded to the best players and fairest team. Currently there are four different awards:

  • The Adidas Golden Ball for best player
  • The Adidas Golden Shoe for top scorer
  • The Adidas Golden Glove for the Best Goalkeeper
  • The FIFA Fair Play Award for the fairest team
