The colors of the Duchy of Brabant were transferred to the Belgian flag, the vertical arrangement of the strips is based on the flag of France. The similar color scheme with the black-red- gold flag of Germany is purely coincidental.

The Belgian tricolor with the black lion was 1936-1940 the Seekriegsflagge. After the founding of the Navy in 1949 a new flag was soon introduced and the Lion Flag used only as a service flag.
The Seekriegsflagge was introduced on 23 February 1950. The saltire is from the Burgundy cross, which was common in Belgian flags in front of the 19th century.
