Fourneaux (Savoie)
Furneaux is a commune with 719 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes. It belongs to the community association Syndicat Intercommunal du Canton de Modane ( SICM ). The inhabitants are called Forniolins.
Geography
The municipality is situated on the river Arc at the edge of the Vanoise National Park, 2 kilometers south-west of Modane.
History
Excavations tools were found from the Neolithic period, which testify that the area was inhabited by Furneaux in prehistoric times.
In the 18th century it belonged to the Vicomté ( dominion of a Viscount ) Maurienne.
Fourneau is the French word for " kiln ", fourneaux is the majority of them. The name therefore means that kilns were on metalworking on site.
Twinning
It is twinned with Bardonecchia in Italy.
Attractions
Entrance of the Fréjus tunnel, which was built in 1870. The tunnel is entered in the Register of Monuments historiques additional (historical monuments ).
