History
Ville Franche is historically the first suburb of Lyons. In Roman times, wins " Francavilla " in importance. Important trade routes lead over its territory after Lugdunum, the capital of the Gallo- Roman Empire.
In 1193 the archbishop Renaud De Forez built a castle on the hill above the valley of Yzeron to protect his lands against enemy attacks. Between 1624 and 1642 made Cardinal de Richelieu, the " castel de Ville Franche " tear down because he feared the strategic importance of the city on the outskirts of Lyons.
