History

First station

The first Highest station originated with the construction of the first railways in Germany. On September 26, 1839, only four years after the route from Nuremberg to Fürth, opened the first section of the Taunus Railway, the nearly nine kilometers leading from the Taunus railway station in Frankfurt until after peak. The first Highest station was 400 meters east of the present, to the king Steiner Street.

The second leading after peak railway 1847 was the short Sodener track - the first side track in Germany. She joined the nationally important spa town of Bad Soden on maximum with the rest of the world. Only in 1877 was followed by the much more important Main -Lahn -Bahn to Eschhofen and Limburg, which through the Taunus created across a connection to casting Lahntalbahn -Koblenz. In the wake of the ever more extensive movement of these first station was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded.

Second station

In 1880 a completely redesigned station was opened. The occasion was the opening of the Main -Lahn -Bahn and 1880 their extension of Frankfurt- Höchst Griesheim Nied, where she joined the Urban Verbindungsbahn Frankfurt am Main, which led in turn to the railway line Frankfurt- Hanau. For the thus generated traffic, the old system was too small. The station was an island station between the routes of Limburg railway (to the south ) and the Taunus Railway ( in the north), west of the King Steiner Street, built. The road-side entrance was from there via a spur road.

The station building was built by the architect and Royal Railway and operating Inspector Heinrich Velde, who completed a total of 37 stations in the Rhine -Main area, one of which shall be the highest railway station as its architectural tour de force.

Opened in 1902, the narrow-gauge railway to operate on Kelkheim to Königstein, so now six routes zuführten to the highest railway station, three from the east and three from the west. Since September 1, 1905, there was the Emperor curve from the direction Roedelheim which will initially only by special trains, including the Court Train Kaiser Wilhelm II and freight trains, was traveled from 1908 of scheduled passenger trains, including an express train Berlin- Wiesbaden and Bad Homburg Bad Nauheim (see also: Bäderbahn Bad Nauheim - Wiesbaden). The station of the self until April 1, 1928 City Höchst am Main was now a transportation hub, with station had to be expanded.

Third station

The entire transport system - previously operated at street level - has been set high. The plant was put into operation in 1914, without that it could be completed first because of the First World War: the new reception building with hints of Art Nouveau was only completed in 1920. Architects Ernst Kleinschmidt and Armin Wegner. Today it is a cultural monument due to the Hessian Monument Protection Act. The station was awarded on May 15, 1927 Name Maximum ( Main ) Hauptbahnhof and - after the incorporation in 1928 - the name Frankfurt (Main ) maximum.

State

Today, only eight tracks are used regularly. A platform is completely shut down. The representative per se, influenced by Art Nouveau lobby of 1914 acts degenerated. There is a bookshop and a travel center of the Deutsche Bahn AG ( DB). In poor condition, there is also the pedestrian tunnel with the stairways to the platforms. In the whole station there is not a single escalator and no lift. At the northern end of the station tunnel is a parking lot. The toilets at the station were closed due to repeated vandalism in 1993. Belatedly, the toilets were reopened in March 2006.

Apart from the nearby educational and cultural center of Frankfurt, which is the Friedrich- Dessauer -Gymnasium and an adult education center houses whose students benefit from excellent transport links, the area north of the station is a residential area.

The main entrance to the station is located on the south side. A station forecourt as such is not apparent. Large trees and unsightly bushes separate the main entrance from the street space. West of the reception building there is a bus station, from which you can currently go into the neighborhoods Are Lingen, Zeilsheim, Nied, Griesheim, Bock Home, Swan Home, Niederrad, Sossenheim, Roedelheim and Unterliederbach, as well as to the Frankfurt am Main airport. Furthermore, from which buses to neighboring cities Sulzbach, Bad Soden, Königstein and Eschborn.

According Highest circle Journal of the station in 2008 should be completely redeveloped. Among other things the platform accesses was thinking of the barrier-free conversion. The renovation of the station building would take an investor. Also, embellishments of station forecourts were planned. The Frankfurter Rundschau reported on 21 July 2007 that is not in accordance with the investor exits, the delay of planning by the railway and the city of Frankfurt as well as disputes over the allocation of costs of remediation between the Rhine - Main Transport Association ( RMV), train and town from 2009 is expected to start of construction. In addition, the renovation would turn out more economical than previously indicated. When an information event on 31 August 2010 was called the year 2014 as the beginning of the renovation work.

Between the Highest Station and the Dalberg course runs along the railway line which originated in the 1920s Bruno Asch system. She was one of the few expressionist garden plants in Germany. Little was obtained from their original state. Between the Deutsche Bahn as the owner and the city of Frankfurt were running negotiations on the restoration of the park, which began in September 2010.

Importance

The maximum station is still a node of urban rail transit in the western part of Frankfurt. However, he has lost much of its significance for the regional traffic. In addition to the S-Bahn trains and suburban trains of the Frankfurt- Königstein Railway ( FKE) hold in maximum only a regional express and two city - express lines. Previously, the maximum was also holding point for the long-distance transport, especially of D- trains. With the opening of the first airport train station in 1972, the shift of the long-distance rail traffic from the Taunus Railway to the north of the Main südmainische route over the stadiums, airports, Rüsselsheim and Mainz began.

S -Bahn

Two lines of the S- Bahn Rhein -Main drive on maximum: the line S1, Wiesbaden coming, retracts just before the main train station in the downtown tunnel and driving in this the Main over the Taunus Railway, she takes the branching in Sachsenhausen east tunnel which leads crosses under a short overground section Offenbach city center and on the Rodgaubahn until Rödermark-Ober -Roden.

The S2 starts in Lower Hausen im Taunus on the Limburg track where a side road branches off to Wiesbaden, following the Limburg web over Eppstein and Hofheim and thrusts in the area of the former highest freight station (S- train station inking ) on the Taunus Railway and the S1. From there it runs jointly with this through the downtown tunnel to the station Offenbach- Bieber, from where they continued traveling over Heusenstamm Dietzenbach and ends there.

In addition, still operate reinforcement trains coming from the central station, in top end (S1). These together formed on the section between the maximum and the city center in about a ten -minute intervals. The driving time to the main station is only ten ( two intermediate stops ) and to the city center, the main station, about thirteen minutes.

Königstein Railway

A private car is the single-track line from Königstein im Taunus about Kelkheim and songs by Bach maximum. While up for inclusion in the FVV the FKE trains commuted only between Königstein and maximum and passengers were forced to target Frankfurt city center to switch to the S-Bahn, since the trains run again directly and without further intermediate stop to the main train station.

Sodener web

Several years ago, the route of the former railway Sodener due to their low utilization from the S- Bahn network was also (she was by then part of the line S3) spun and transferred the FKE. The king Steiner and Soden Railway turn of the northwest and the north east, both only a few hundred meters from the railway station in the run-up to a track.

Regional trains

Of the once numerous, holding in top, left express and express trains are a regional express and two city - express lines:

  • The line RE 20 runs weekdays ( except Saturdays ) along the Limburger web over Hofheim and low Hausen to Limburg, where the trains between low- Hausen and Limburg only in Idstein, Bad Camberg, Niederbrechen and Eschhofen hold.
  • The line runs SE 20 as the line RE 20 to Limburg. This line holds between low- Hausen and Limburg at any station.
  • The line SE 10 (Rheingau line) runs benutzend about Wiesbaden and Koblenz to Neuwied, the Taunus Railway and the right Rhine line. Until the change of timetable 2010/2011 this line wrong under the name RE 10 ( Lorelei Express) every two hours. There were also individual compounds of the line RB 10 ( Loreley -Bahn ) in the rush hours. Until 11 December 2010, the lines RE / RB 10 were operated by the Deutsche Bahn AG. For December 12, 2010 took over the VIAS GmbH to operate on this line and named it in SE 10 (Rheingau line ) around.

These three lines begin at the Central Station and offer, in addition to the S -Bahn, a mainly used by commuters an alternative connection between the maximum and the main train station.

Planning

Regional tangent West

For the future, the highest railway station, the planned regional rail tangent Regional West ( RTW) could become very important.

Although only five kilometers lie between the maximum and the terminals of the airport, there is no direct rail connection between these two places. The railway line, which should lead from the northwestern city or Bad Homburg Eschborn after maximum would result from there over the Leuna bridge to the airport and on to Neu-Isenburg. The airport could be achieved by maximum within a few minutes driving time, a considerable advantage for the location maximum.

In the area around the train station, the maximum RTW from the northeast would be crossing over Sodener train and leave in the south on a road to be built railway line over the Leuna road. The exact route is still unclear, a version by the Höchst Industrial Park is under discussion.

Tram

The promised incorporation in the Treaty of 1928 the city limit access to the Frankfurt tram was realized in 1952. However, the tram runs just a block away on Best area to its terminus at the Zuckschwerdtstraße. An extension until at least the station has since been in the discussion.

In addition to leadership of the tram through the narrow streets of the Highest downtown also an introduction of the tram is discussed in the track area of the station due to the low utilization of some platform tracks. Concrete plans are not yet available.

The interior cleaning plant ( daytime regional trains ) are purified from two tracks where round-the- clock ICE trains.
