Franz Bauer

Franz Andreas Bauer ( born October 4, 1758 in Feldberg, † December 11 1840 in Kew ) was a painter, who drew mainly botanical illustrations. His botanical author abbreviation is " FABauer ".

Franz Bauer was the son of Lucas Bauer. The father, court painter to the Prince of Liechtenstein, died just 1762nd Franz was also later a job as a painter to the Prince of Liechtenstein and specialized soon on the presentation of plants. His brother, Ferdinand Lukas was also botanical illustrator.

1788 Franz Bauer went to England, where he got a steady job as a painter and draftsman to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew through the mediation of Joseph Banks. The content of the site was sufficiently large so that Bauer was financially secure and out of the botanical drawings had to accept any further orders.

He has become famous soon for his detailed illustrations. For a short time he gave drawing lessons at the English court; so colored as Princess Elizabeth and Queen Charlotte under his direction some of his drawings.

For very small structures he used a microscope and immersed himself in the study and representation of plant diseases. From 1816 Bauer worked with Everard Home, who examined anatomical structures of various animals and the human body.

Bauer died in 1840 in Kew, after his death many of his original drawings, as well as his earlier deceased brother were auctioned. In honor Bauers some plant species have been named, about Coelia baueriana, Galeandra baueri and Oncidium baueri.
