Franz Hegi ( born April 16, 1774 Lausanne, † March 14, 1850 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter and engraver.
Life
The family of Franz Hegi lived when he was born in Lausanne, where his mother came, Eléonore Verdeil. His father John Hegi was a goldsmith, jeweler and engraver. 1780 the family moved to Zurich. Here the young Franz Hegi learned the painter Matthias Pfenninger (1739-1813), the aquatint technique, which was invented in 1765-1768. Hegi was known for its countless engravings and aquatint for New Year leaves, almanacs and books. His paintings are now a valuable source for the history of Switzerland in the late 18th and early 19th century.
