Fritz Gschweidl

Friedrich " Fritz" Gschweidl ( born December 13, 1901 in Vienna, † April 15, 1970 ) was an Austrian football player, coach and member of the miracle team.

Career

The tall striker, his career in 1919 began at Strebersdorf and came across the second division SC movement XX 1924 First Vienna Football Club 1894. "The long Fritz", as he was called because of its height was trained as center forward and held this position in both the club and later from the national team. Thanks to its playful flexibility Gschweidl but was also often used as a right connector. He played very team player, was considered very good on the ball and was able to perfectly cover the ball but again play fast. Equipped with these systems became Fritz Gschweidl in Vienna immediately for regular players and celebrated with the Döblingern unforgettable success. He won with the Vienna five Austrian league titles, three Cup victories and was also in the Mitropa Cup - winning team of 1931. Fritz Gschweidl still played as a 45 - year-old in the championship and graduated to his career end of 1948 a total of 774 games for the First Vienna FC 1894.

His debut in the Austrian national football team gave Friedrich " Fritz" Gschweidl on May 4, 1924 game against Hungary in Budapest. At the first international game of the so-called miracle team on May 16, 1931 against Scotland Gschweidl was already 29 years old and had 27 team missions since then. In the National Team, he was a good scorer and head ball player the ideal complement to Matthias Sindelar. His last game for the national team played the " long Fritz" on March 24, 1935 in the 0-2 home defeat of the team against Italy. In the period 1924-1935 he completed 44 caps for Austria, scoring 12 goals. His goals in the era of the miracle team scored Gschweidl against Germany (2 ), Switzerland and Hungary.

1948 ended Gschweidl his active career and took in the same year a trainer working for Young Boys Bern in Switzerland. Soon after, however, he decided to return to his trained profession as an accountant, which he held until his retirement. Fritz Gschweidl died in 1970 at the age of 69 years and was buried at the Central Cemetery Stammersdorfer. In his honor, in 1993, the Gschweidlgasse Floridsdorf was named after him.
