Gabriel Vanel

Gabriel Marie Étienne Vanel ( born January 12, 1925 in Ampuis, France, † March 1, 2013 ) was Archbishop of Auch.

Life

Gabriel Vanel studied philosophy and theology at the institution Notre- Dame-de- l'Argentière in Oullins and the Grand Seminary of Saint- Irenee in Lyon. He received on 29 June 1949, the priesthood and was vicar in the Archdiocese of Lyon. He was a chaplain in the 27e division alpine in Tizi Ouzou, Algeria and 1964-1970 French military chaplains in Germany.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on 21 April 1970 Titular Bishop of Rota and the military vicar of the French Military Ordinariate. He received his episcopal consecration of the Bishop of Bayeux, Jean Badre, on 13 June of the same year; Co-consecrators were Jean -Paul -Marie Vincent, Bishop of Bayonne, and Franz Hengsbach, Bishop of Essen. On February 12, 1983, he resigned from his office as Vicar and took over the management of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 21 June 1985 for the Archbishop of Auch and adopted on 1 March 1996 to his resignation.
