Gairo, Sardinia

Gairo is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 1485 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Ogliastra Sardinia. The community is located about 16 kilometers southwest of Tortoli on the Tyrrhenian Sea. At the southeastern edge of the municipality stems from the Pelau. With an exclave of the municipality lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea ( town Coccorocci ).

History

After the old town center and the historic castle in 1951 almost completely destroyed by a flood, it came in the years after the reconstruction. In contrast to this, the present-day town is also known as Nuovo or Gairo Gairo Sant Elena.

Traffic

Passing through the municipality, the Strada Statale 198 di Seui e Lanusei Serri to Tortoli. Gairo has a station on the narrow gauge railway line Manda -Arbatax, which is served in the summer months from Trenino Verde.
