The Dalasi is since 1 July 1971, the currency of the West African State Gambia.

History

The Dalasi was introduced on 1 July 1971 as the new currency of Gambia. With the introduction was also changed to a decimal currency. It first notes were issued for 1, 5, 10 and 25 Dalasi.

1975, a 10 - Dalasi coin was issued to commemorate the 10 years of independence. In 1989, the range of the notes has been extended to a new 50 - Dalasi banknote.

In September of 1996, new 5 -, 10 -, 25 - and 50 - Dalasi introduced banknotes. On 20 July 2001, the range of banknotes was issued upwards to a new 100 - Dalasi banknote, to date, the highest banknote.

The exchange rate of the Dalasi to Euro reached on 30 December 2004 low of 40.2087 Dalasi for one euro.

In July 2006, the banknotes were redesigned and equipped with modern security features such as holograms, these were presented to the public on 27 July 2006. The old notes were changed and are no longer valid.

Coins and notes

Currently there are coins of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and a Bututs Dalasi and banknotes of 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 Dalasi in circulation. Bututs have largely disappeared in everyday life, only the 50 - Butut coins are rarely used.

The Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS), to which The Gambia belongs, plans to provide for its 15 Member States, a common currency. The Eco should be introduced the euro as a model in 2005. So far, however, the launch is postponed indefinitely.
