George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland

George Granville Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland KG (* August 8, 1786, † February 22, 1861 ) was a British nobleman and politician.

Life

George Granville Sutherland - Leveson - Gower was the eldest son of four children of George Granville Leveson - Gower, later Duke of Sutherland (1758-1833), and his wife Elizabeth Gordon, 19th Countess of Sutherland ( 1765-1839 ), daughter and heiress of Sir William Gordon, 18th Earl of Sutherland, and Mary Maxwell.

Between 1808 and 1820 he was a deputy ( Whig ) for the districts of St Mawes, Newcastle -under- Lyme and Staffordshire. Later he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire. Sutherland - Leveson - Gower commissioned in the mid-19th century the architect Charles Barry with the transformation of the family seat Dunrobin Castle on the east coast of Scotland. This had already designed the Palace of Westminster in London and should build a French style castle with a Versailles -inspired gardens.

Leveson - Gower was awarded in 1826 to his father's lifetime a seat in the House of Lords, by transfer its subsidiary title of Baron Gower previously got ( Writ of acceleration ). In 1833 he inherited at his death the title of Duke of Sutherland.

Family

On May 18, 1823 George Sutherland - Leveson - Gower married Lady Harriet Elizabeth Georgiana in Tentham Howard ( 1806-1868 ), third daughter of Scottish aristocrat George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle, and his wife Lady Georgiana Dorothy Cavendish. The marriage produced eight children were born:
