Giddings is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of Lee County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the south of the county on U.S. Highway 290 and U.S. Highway 77, about 80 km east of Austin and 165 kilometers west of Houston in southeast Texas middle and has a total area of 13.4 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface is.

History

The town was founded in 1871 when the Houston and Texas Central Railway moved its tracks here. Was named the place either by Jabez Deming Giddings, a major shareholder of the railway or by Dewitt C. Giddings.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 5,105 people in 1,639 households and 1,125 families. The population density was 382.7 inhabitants per km ².
