Giovanni Cheli

Cardinal Giovanni Cheli ( born October 4, 1918 in Turin, Italy, † February 8, 2013 in Rome ) was a Vatican diplomat and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Giovanni Cheli studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Asti and at the Pontifical " Athenaeum Lateranense " and received his licentiate in theology and a doctorate in Canon Law. On April 21, 1942, he received in Asti the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked as a youth pastor of the Catholic Action and taught French, history and mathematics at the seminary of his native diocese.

After further studies from 1949 to 1952 at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He was initially 1952-1955 Attaché at the Apostolic Nunciature in Guatemala. Meanwhile, he was also a lecturer at the Catholic University " Santa Maria" in Guatemala City and got on 2 March 1953 by Pope Pius XII. the title secret chamberlain of His Holiness bestowed. From 1955 to 1962 he was secretary to the nuncio in Spain, 1962-1967 nunciature counselor in Italy. Pope Paul VI. appointed him on March 1, 1965 House Prelate of His Holiness. From 1967 to 1973 Cheli worked for the Pontifical Council for public fishing characteristics of the Roman Curia.

1973 appointed him to Paul VI. the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York. On September 8, 1978, Pope John Paul I appointed Titular Archbishop of Santa Giusta. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Secretary of State Jean -Marie Villot on 16 September of the same year; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Giuseppe Caprio and Agostino Casaroli.

Pope John Paul II appointed Cheli on September 18, 1986 Pro- President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migration and Tourism, whose name means " the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People Pontifical Council " was amended on 28 June 1988. On March 1, 1989 Giovanni Cheli was appointed president of the same Council.

In solemn consistory of February 21, 1998 John Paul II took him as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Santi Cosma e Damiano in the College of Cardinals. As a motto Cheli Unitas chose in Charitate ( "Unity in mercy ").

On 1 March 2008 it rose Benedict XVI. cardinal priest per hac vice. Cheli died on February 8, 2013 at the age of 94 years.

Giovanni Cheli has received numerous awards, including the Order de Isabel la Católica, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
