Golden Globe Award: Best Actor - Drama

Winners and nominees in the category Best Actor - Drama (since 2005 Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama ), which honors the most outstanding performances by the actors of the past calendar year. The category was created in 1951 to life. From 1944 to 1950, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ( HFPA ) awarded a Best Actor award ( Best Actor in a Motion Picture ) no distinction between film genre.

In 46 of 71 cases, the best drama actor was later awarded the Oscar, last done in 2014, with the award ceremony at the U.S. actor Matthew McConaughey ( Dallas Buyers Club ). The rare honor to be nominated in a year for two different rolls of film - 2007 was the American Leonardo DiCaprio ( The Departed Blood Diamond, The Departed ).

51 times were American actor to win Best Actor Award ( including emigrated to the U.S. players, such as the Hungarian Paul Lukas ), followed by their colleagues from the United Kingdom ( 15 wins ) and Ireland (4 wins ). As the only actor from the German speaking Maximilian Schell could win the prize in 1962 for his performance in the Hollywood production Judgment at Nuremberg, for which he later won the Academy Award. In vain he competed in 1976 with The Man in the Glass Booth, while Oskar Werner was classified in 1966 for the English-language drama The Ship of Fools in the list of nominees. The only nominations for non-English speaking roles won 1978 Marcello Mastroianni for the Italian production A special day and 2005 Javier Bardem for the Spanish film The Sea Inside.
