Gold ( I) chloride is an inorganic chemical compound consisting of the group of the chlorides.
Production and representation
Gold ( I) chloride may be obtained by thermal degradation of a tetrachloroauric ( III) acid obtained gold (III ) chloride.
Also possible is the production by thermal decomposition of gold (III ) chloride.
Properties
Gold (I ) chloride is a pale yellow solid. It is soluble in alkali chloride solutions and decomposes when dissolved in water in gold and Trichlorhydroxogold ( III) acid.
In return, some gold (I ) chloride complexes are very stable.
The compound has an orthorhombic crystal structure with space group Cmmm (a = 6.41 Å, b = 3.36 Å, c = 9.48 Å ) ( another source space group I41amd ). Its enthalpy of formation is -34.7 kJ / mol.
Use
Gold ( I) chloride may be used as a catalyst for organic syntheses.
