The Government Information Office (新闻 局Chinese, Pinyin Xinwen Jú, English Government Information Office, abbreviation GIO ) was an authority on ministerial level, which belonged to the Executive Yuan of the Republic of China ( Taiwan); the Executive Yuan is the Cabinet / Council of Ministers of the state. The GIO had the task of spreading the government's policies and adapt the media policy to the needs of the time.

Tasks

The work of the GIO consisted primarily is to explain the state policy; the GIO Minister also acted as Government Spokesman of the Republic of China. In addition, the GIO had to take care of the job, to announce important information at home and abroad as well as foreign journalists in Taiwan. In addition, the GIO worked intensively on the preparation and editing of publications. These included foreign-language periodicals such as the monthly Taiwan Review ( English, 65 pages ), the bi-monthly magazine Taiwan today ( German, 65 pages), the bi-monthly magazine Taiwan Hoy ( Spanish, 49 pages), the monthly magazine Taiwan aujourd'hui (French, 49 pages), the bi-monthly magazine Taiwanskaja panoramic ( Russian Тайваньская панорама; Russian, 65 pages ), news websites in English ( Taiwan Today) and French ( Taiwan Info ). Moreover, the GIO published the Yearbook of the Republic of China (English), the brochure " Taiwan at a glance" ( in many languages ​​), and it created other information materials and advertising films when needed. In the development of information and cultural projects abroad, the foreign branches of the GIO played a prominent role on the ground.

History

The GIO was officially launched on 2 May 1947, the Government of the Republic of China in the then capital Nanjing in mainland China. In the turmoil of the civil war between that of the National People's Party ( Kuomintang, KMT ) -led government and the Chinese Communists, the administrative status of the GIO has been amended several times before it was reactivated on 1 January 1954 in Taiwan. On 1 March 2006, the National Communications Commission (国家 通讯 传播 委员会, English National Communications Commission, NCC Abbr ) was established on the part of the responsibilities of the GIO has been transferred, such as the regulation of the development of communication and information technology, the award of broadcasting licenses and others.
