Hanni Wenzel

Hannelore " Hanni " Wenzel, married Hannelore Weirather, ( born December 14, 1956 in Straubing, Germany ) is a former alpine skier Liechtenstein. She was the first and only Olympic gold medalist in their country.

Biography

Hanni Wenzel was born in Bavaria, but moved with her parents at the age of one year in the Principality of Liechtenstein. 1974, yet 17 years old, she was in St. Moritz the first time world champion in slalom, followed by success in the Olympics and the World Cup Skiing. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo she was not allowed to participate because they had a professional license. In the same year Hanni Wenzel ended her athletic career and married the Austrian ex- ski racer Harti Weirather.

Together, they operate in Gamprin the sports marketing agency founded in 1987, WWP ( Weirather, Wenzel & Partner ). Her daughter Tina Weirather is also a ski racer and starts for Liechtenstein. Her brother Andreas Wenzel was a successful ski racer.

She was nine times elected 1971-1984 to Liechtenstein Sportswoman of the Year. In 1980 she was awarded by the International Association of Ski Journalists Award Skieur d'Or. In 2004, she the golden laurel leaf of the Princely Government has been awarded for their sporting achievements.

Overall Hanni Wenzel won 33 World Cup races (2 downhill, giant slalom 12, 11 slaloms, 8 combinations ). In addition, it was 25 times second and 31 times third parties. With 189 top 10 places in the World Cup she's in this Ranking in the women's second behind Renate Götschl ( 198).
