Hans Bornemann

Hans Bornemann (* 1420, detected in the period 1448-1469; † ca 1474 probably in Hamburg ) was a Hamburg painter of the late Middle Ages.

Life

The first documentary evidence in 1448 calls it by its full name as the owner of a heritage property in Hamburg. However, there is already a mention in the 1444 testament of detectable only in documents painter Conrad of Vechta, which considers a workshop employees Hans. In this testament him a valuable cloak and half of his (of Vechta ) is bequeathed to art.

Most of his surviving works is located in Lüneburg. Nevertheless Bornemann is considered Hamburg painter, for here he had his residence and was a member of the painters Office.

Hans Bornemann was one of the founders of the Brotherhood of the Guild of St. Luke in Hamburg. Under the name of the Evangelist Luke also in other towns that time the painters had come together to form social networks. For the Council of the City of Hamburg, he worked among other things in it more representative of Stade. In City Hall, he created seventeen prince pictures. Part of his training Bornemann was probably in the Netherlands, probably in the influence area of ​​the workshop of Robert Campin or the Master of Flémalle. Influenced by the Dutch modern suggestions for the time brought Hans Bornemann a new artistic representation to northern Germany, which has designated the art historian Hans -Georg Gmelin as ' a new observation of reality '. So Bornemann created in the years 1444-1447 on the holy altar crowns the panorama of Lüneburg, in the background the first topographically accurate Cityscape northern Germany. After Bornemann's death his widow married Gherburg 1475 the younger painters Hinrik Funhof, so the could take over the workshop. Since it was not allowed the painter widows more than a year to lead the workshop itself, Bornemann must therefore be 1474 died.
