Hapoel HaMizrachi

HaPo'el haMisrachi (Hebrew הפועל המזרחי, lit. Workers of the Mizrachi ) was a Zionist Orthodox Workers' Party of Israel and a predecessor of the National Religious Party.

History

HaPoel HaMisrachi was founded in Jerusalem in 1922 under the Zionist slogan "Torah va'Avodah " ( Torah and Labor) as a religious- Zionist organization. They supported the establishment of kibbutzim and moshavim as these, are in their view, offered by the Halacha. The name comes from Mizrachi, as an acronym for Merkaz Ruchani (Hebrew מרכז רוחני ) lit. Intellectual center.

At the first election in Israel after the Declaration of Independence on 25 January 1949, the party took an electoral alliance with the parties, Agudat Jisra'el, Poalei Agudat Jisra'el and HaMisrachi under the name HaChasit haDatit haMe'uchedet (United Religious Front) part. The coalition gained 16 seats in the election in the first Knesset, seven of which are presented HaPoel HaMisrachi, and became the third largest party in the Knesset after Mifleget Poale Eretz Israel ( Mapai ) and Mapam. In the newly formed government was Chaim - Moshe Shapira Minister of Health, Minister for Immigration and Minister of the Interior. Due to different views on religious education and the resolution of the Ministry of rationing and supply and the proposed appointment of an entrepreneur as Minister of Trade and Industry, the United Religious Front left the government coalition. Chaim - Moshe Shapira again took over the three ministries.

Skip to second election on July 30, 1951 HaPoel HaMisrachi approached without a partner and won eight seats in the Second Knesset. In the following form a government with David Ben- Gurion as prime minister, took over Chaim - Moshe Shapira, the Home Office and the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Josef Burg took over the Ministry of Health. The neoplasms of the Cabinet's 1952 and 1954 during the second term Chaim - Moshe Shapira took on the Ministry of Religion and in addition, the Ministry of Welfare. Josef Burg took over the Ministry of Postal Services. In the fourth government during the legislative session Chaim - Moshe Shapira took over in addition to the two above-mentioned ministries nor the Interior Ministry and Josef Burg was Postmaster General.

In the third election on July 26, 1955 HaPo'el haMisrachi entered into an electoral alliance with the party HaMisrachi under the name National Religious Front at. The electoral coalition has won eleven MPs mandates in the third Knesset, of which nine mandates on HaPo'el haMisrachi, and became the fourth largest party in the Knesset.
