Hégenheim

Hegenheim (Eng. originally Hegenheim, alsatian Hageme or Hägeme ) is a commune with 3193 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the district Mulhouse, on the Canton Huningue and is the seat of the municipal association Trois Frontières.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the southeast edge of the Hegenheim Sundgau, on the border with Switzerland, about four kilometers west of the Basel city center. Through the community of Lertzbach flows ( on Swiss territory Lörzbach called ).

Neighboring communities of Hegenheim are Hésingue in the north, Saint -Louis in the north- east, Allschwil ( Switzerland ) and Basel in the southeast, Hagenthal -le- Bas in the southwest and Buschwiller in the West.

Jewish cemetery and synagogue

The Jewish cemetery Hegenheim was built in 1673 and served the Jews of the diocese of Basel as a burial site. By August 1903, when the Jewish cemetery was opened in Basel, members of the Jewish community were buried in Basel Hegenheim.

The Hégenheimer synagogue was built in 1821. She served from 1874 as a Jewish retirement home. Today the house is in an advanced state of decay.
