Helen Chenoweth-Hage

Helen P. Chenoweth - Hage ( born January 27, 1938 in Topeka, Kansas, † October 2, 2006 in Tonopah, Nevada) was an American politician. Between 1995 and 2001, she represented the first electoral district of the state of Idaho in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and career

Helen Chenoweth - Hage was born Helen Margaret Palmer. She attended Grants Pass High School in Oregon and then the Whitworth College in Spokane. There she met Nick Chenoweth, whom she married soon after. The couple had two children; They were divorced in 1975. Between 1964 and 1975 she was a consultant of government medical institutions. In Orofino, Idaho, she led the management of the Northside Medical Clinic.

Political career

Helen Chenoweth was a member of the Republican Party. From 1975 to 1977 she served on the board of the party in Idaho. She was also head of the election campaign of Congressman Steve Symms and co-owner of a consulting firm. In the congressional elections of 1994, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where she replaced on January 3, 1995 Larry LaRocco of the Democratic Party, she had defeated in the elections with 55:45 percent of the vote. Two years later she was able to defend its mandate to Democrat Dan Williams just barely with 49:48 percent of the vote. In 1999 she married the rancher and author Wayne Hage. Then they took the name Helen Chenoweth - Hage. After leaving Congress, she lived with her husband on his ranch in Idaho. It published writings and held guest lectures, mainly on the subject of private property rights. Her husband died on 5 June 2006 at the age of 68 years. She herself was on 2 October 2006 in a traffic accident.
