Helfrantzkirch

Helfrantzkirch ( German Helfrantskirch ) is a commune with 747 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin region of Alsace. It belongs to the canton of Sierentz and the Communauté de communes community association du Pays de Sierentz.

Geography

The municipality is located in Helfrantzkirch Sundgau, between Altkirch and Basel. The municipality consists of the villages of Les Trois Maisons and Hameau.

Neighboring communities of Helfrantzkirch are Magstatt -le-Haut and Stetten in the north, chapels in the east, Ranspach -le- Bas in the southeast, Ranspach -le-Haut in the south, Berentzwiller the southwest, Jettingen in the west and Zaessingue in the northwest.

History

In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the bailiwick of Upper soldiers. Place names of that time were on this district Rueschwiller, Rantzkirch and ad Caritatem. In the 12th century Saint Bartholomew's Church was built.

Beginning of the 12th century was in place of the present church of St. Bartholomew, a former building had to be completely replaced after dilapidation. This happened from 1827 to 1830 after plans by the architect Wagner from Altkirch. The new church tower collapsed, so that the church could be only in 1843 handed over their destiny.
