Heľpa

Helpa (1927-1948 Slovak " Helpa "; German Helpach on Gran, Hungarian Helpa ) is a town in central Slovakia.

Location

It lies in the valley Horehronské podolie on the banks of the Hron, at the foot of the Low Tatras in the north and the Muránska planina in the south, 24 km of Brezno. The main road I/66 runs along the edge of the town and continues to the intersection with the road I/67 under the Vernár Pass. The town has a station on the railway line Banská Bystrica - Cervena Skala.

History

The village was mentioned in a land register of the reign of Muráň 1549 for the first time and was first settled by Vlachs. The village has a Catholic church of St. Mary dating from 1806 in the late Baroque style.
