It overcome the boundaries of contemporary pop music and can also be viewed over genre boundaries as a great composition. The musical basis is a mixture of high keyboards and catchy guitar harmonies. The text is written by Lennox of the desperate search for love, the rain is the flood of feelings symbolize that assail them. Stewart Mason of Allmusic called the song elegant and majestic and praised the orchestral arrangement. The structure differs from the usual sequence of verse- chorus-verse from, instead, the line "Here comes the rain again" and " So baby talk to me " repeatedly, without the repetitions differ materially voneninander. The monotony is broken only by a short bridge in the middle of the song, which is supported by eight strings.

Music Video

The music video was filmed and directed by Jonathan Gershfield in December 1983. Originally, the rotation at Loch Lomond should take place, but the area the Eurythmics was not bleak enough that they dodged the winter Orkney island of Hoy. This was inspired by the video 's 1981 film drama The French Lieutenant's. It begins with a close up of Annie Lennox and turns into a scene in which she runs along on windswept cliffs, while Stewart she followed with a video camera. Lennox protects itself with a blanket against the cold, because they only wearing a white nightgown, and runs away from her pursuer into a house. In the next scene she is seen in a white nightgown, she holds a candle and sings. Since Stewart filming them still with the video camera, she tries to escape it, and passes through the freezing cold until it reaches a shipwreck on the beach. The video is dominated by a mysterious and eerie mood and was very well received by both fans and critics.
