Hilario Durán

Hilario Durán Luis Torres ( born 1953 in Havana ) is a Cuban -derived, Canadian musician ( piano, keyboards), arranger, composer and band leader of Latin jazz.

Biography

Hilario Durán was heavily influenced early in his career by the Cuban music of Ernesto Lecuona, Frank Emilio Flynn and Peruchin. He studied and graduated from the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory in Havana, where he met Chucho Valdés, Paquito D' Rivera, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. With his first band called Los D' Siempre he turned away from the traditional Cuban music and played jazz.

His professional career began as a member of the band of trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, who served from 1981 to 1990. With the numerous tours, he also worked with Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra and Michel Legrand. In 1990 he founded his own group Perspectiva, with whom he toured Latin America and Europe. In 1991 he worked with Jane Bunnett ( Spirits of Havana ). In 1995, he loosened his belt after a European tour and was devoted to solo projects; In 1996 he made his album Francisco 's Song followed by Killer Tumbao (1997 ) where he played with Cuban musicians such as Tata Güines and Changuito.

In the late 1990s Durán moved to Canada and is a member of the jazz department at Humber College in Toronto, where he teaches piano, and ensemble playing. In addition, he has since worked in various projects, such as on the Modern Drummer Festival with Horacio " El Negro" Hernandez, John Patitucci, and Michael Brecker. In 2001, he performed at the Jazz Festival in Barranquilla Colombia, including in a band with Dave Valentin, Juan Pablo Torres, John Benitez and " Patato " Valdes. In 2002, he worked as a pianist and composer Paquito D ' Rivera, Regina Carter and Brazilian singer Leny Andrade, he has performed with the World Festival Orchestra in New Jersey Performing Arts Center. In 2005, he presented with Cuban and Canadian musicians together a big band that has performed at several Toronto Jazz Festival. In 2006, he worked with singer Nelly Furtado in the album Loose.

As a composer, Durán worked in the 2000s with the classical ensembles Gryphon Trio and the Quartetto Gelato. During this time he also played with the Russian Globalis symphony orchestra, with which he played arrangements by Roberto Occhipinti. In 2003, he was first nominated for the Juno Award; In 2005 he won the award for his album New Danzon.
