Horia Tecau (born 19 January 1985 in Braşov ) is a Romanian tennis player.

Life and career

To 2003: Junior career, Davis Cup debut and first successes on Futures tournaments

Even as a junior Horia Tecau has been extremely successful. In individual he reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2003, in a double he could in 2002 and 2003 to win the title there on the side of his compatriot Florin Mergea. In addition, they reached in 2002 and 2003 respectively, the final of the Australian Open and were extended period of time together at the top of the double World Ranking.

In 2003, the duo has also won three Futures titles in the adult area, and thus achieved a ranking in the top 500 of the double - tennis world rankings. They also played in the Romanian Davis Cup team and were able to a 3-2 victory over Ecuador to contribute a five- set victory over the Lapentti brothers. 2004-2007: First Challenger titles and ATP debut

2004, followed by six more doubles title at Future tournaments, including three on the side of Mergea, two with Gabriel Moraru and another with Alex Kuznetsov. In August 2004 Tecau and Mergea won in Timişoara their first Challenger title. In early 2005 he was able to celebrate two more futures victories and reached rank 326 its best-ever individual placing. In doubles, he was less successful, but held in the top 500 in the world rankings.

2006 Tecau tried to Challenger tournaments to gain a foothold, but it remained in the two semi-finals in Mexico City and Lexington. He focused from now on more on his double career. In this year he moved four times to the final of a Challenger tournament, but remained without a tournament victory.

This changed a year later when he again won the Challenger tournament in September 2007 on the side of Florin Mergea in his home town of Brasov and pushed forward for the first time among the top 200 in the world rankings.

2008-2009: Grand Slam debut, entry into the Top 100 and first ATP Finals

2008 was followed by two further joint Challenger wins in Cherbourg -Octeville and Constanta and three Challenger titles in Milan, San Marino and Eckental on the side of the Swiss Yves Allegro. In addition Tecau first played in the main round of Grand Slam tournaments, reaching thereby in Paris ( with Mergea ) and New York ( Allegro ), respectively the second round. At the end he was first out in the top 100 in the world rankings.

In January 2009 Tecau could advance on the side of his compatriot and coach Andrei Pavel to the knockout round of the Australian Open, in May he also reached with Pavel in Kitzbühel his first final of an ATP tournament. After a second-round defeat at the French Open Tecau and Pavel reached at Wimbledon again the next round, where they lost to eventual semi-finalists Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman only in the fifth set to 12:14. Followed in July in Stuttgart, the second ATP final, this time on the side of Victor Hanescu. The end of 2009 Tecau was ranked 46 in the world rankings.

2010-2011: ATP titles and Wimbledon finals

Right at the beginning of 2010 Tecau then won his first ATP title at the side of the New Zealander Marcus Daniell in Auckland. After a Challenger title in Marrakech in March was followed in April in Casablanca, the second ATP title, this time with Swede Robert Lindstedt. With it he won in June in 's- Hertogenbosch another title for the first time and move into Wimbledon in the final of a Grand Slam tournament. However, this was lost to Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner. Just two weeks later, the Swedish Bastad, retracted again at the side of Lindstedt, the fourth and in August in New Haven, the fifth ATP title of the season. At the U.S. Open but Tecau and Lindstedt dropped out in the second round. At season's end, followed by four Erstrundenniederlagen in a row, making qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals was missed.

Early 2011 could reach the final Tecau and Lindstedt at the tournament in Brisbane, but they had a calf injury at Lindstedt give up after the first sentence. Also at the Australian Open, she had to give up their first round match early. Therefore Tecau played at the ATP tournament in Zagreb in February along with Dick Norman, with whom he won the title at first attempt. After two Erstrundenniederlagen with changing partners Tecau to win a tournament in the ATP World Tour 500 category in February in Acapulco along with Victor Hanescu for the first time. In March, he played back together with Lindstedt and in April the next title could be won in Casablanca. At the French Open, the two failed in the quarterfinals to the eventual tournament champions Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor. After a brief final defeat in 's- Hertogenbosch Tecau and Lindstedt were able to reach the final at Wimbledon, as in the previous year. However, towards the Bryan brothers they went to three sets again as losers from the square. After a successful title defense in Båstad and a final defeat in Washington Tecau and Lindstedt reached at the U.S. Open for the third time in a row a Grand Slam quarter-final, but failed short of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini. In October, Tecau and Lindstedt could return the favor in Beijing in Mirny and Nestor for the French Open defeat and reached another final in which they were subject, however, as in Washington Michaël Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic. Because of their success, the two were qualified for the first time in November 2011 for the ATP World Tour Finals, but where they did with just one win from three games in the first round.

2012: Australian Open victory in the Mixed

In January 2012, Lindstedt Tecau and reached the Australian Open semifinals for the first time, but left there in spite of a match ball against the Bryan brothers. Tecau also joined in the mixed, where he won his first Grand Slam title with Bethanie Mattek -Sands. During the first half of the year he reached the finals together with Robert Lindstedt of Rotterdam and Madrid. In April Tecau won for the first time his home tournament in Bucharest, in 's- Hertogenbosch and Lindstedt he repeated their success of 2010. At the French Open she retired this year in the second round. Much better it ran again in Wimbledon, Tecau and Lindstedt where consecutively moved in for the third time in the final.
