IIHF European Cup 1986

The Hockey European Cup in the 1985/86 season was the 21st edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in October 1985; the final was played in August 1986. A total of 17 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended for the eighth time in a row the title.

Mode and participants

The country masters of the Year 1984/85 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was held in the knockout system in return game. The final was played out -for- everyone in a group of five in the mode.

Tournament

Qualification

The qualifying matches were played on 10 and 24 October 1985. Four teams played two qualifiers for the first round.

First round

The matches of the first round were held in November 1985. Ten teams played the five qualifiers for the second round.

2nd round

The first round matches were held in February 1986. The five winners of the first round as well as the five seeded participants - Ilves Tampere Finland, Federal Republic of Germany SB Rosenheim, Sweden Sodertalje SK, ASD Dukla Jihlava Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union defending champion CSKA Moscow - played from the five qualifiers for the final tournament.

Final tournament

The final tournament was held from 24 to 30 August 1986 at the German Rosenheim. The games were held comprehensive Marox Stadium in 7200 viewers.
