International Biology Olympiad

The International Biology Olympiad (IBO ) is an international student competition, to which each country is allowed to send four participants who are not older than 20 years. The competition is open to individuals, so it is not a team competition. After several theoretical and practical tests gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded. The most successful participant countries are China and Russia. Germany usually occupies one of the places 10-20. Meanwhile, students take part in more than 50 countries.

Expiry of the qualification in Germany

There is a four-stage selection process.

At the first round, each student of a German general school can participate. It takes place from around May to September of the previous year's IBO as homework using any tools instead. The tasks you can get at the State Commissioner or on the website of the Biology Olympiad Germany (see links).

In the second round of the 400 best in the first round will be invited. You must then write under subject teacher supervision around November of last year's IBO a two- hour written examination. In this examination it is necessary to handle both multiple choice and more complex tasks.

In the third round come from these 400 then usually 45 This round usually takes place in late February of the IBO -year rather than a one-week seminar in Kiel at the IPN. Here, the participants have to cope with a four-hour theory and several 1- 2-hour practical exams.

The fourth round of the arising therefrom 10-12 best will be selected, which in turn drive the end of May of the IBO -year to a one-week seminar in Kiel. Of these participants now take the 4 best as a German team to the International Olympiad, which will be held in July each year in a different country.

Expiry of the qualification in Switzerland

The selection process in Switzerland has three stages.

The tasks of the first round are usually sent to the Swiss canton schools and high schools in the early autumn, and the exam is supervised by a local teacher. Questions are available in German, French and Italian.

The 60-70 best participants of the first round will be invited to a week-long preparatory week in November. This school is deepened and further leading fabric taught. The week of preparation is also a unique opportunity for biologically interested young people from all over Switzerland to close acquaintances and friendships.

Beginning of February then finds the second round also take the form of a theory exam. Here, the knowledge from the week of preparation will be tested in particular.

The top 20 of the second round will be invited to SBO week at the University of Bern. During this week, over 15 practical tests are carried out. On SBO day finally four bronze, silver and gold medals will be awarded. The four gold medal winners will represent Switzerland at the International Olympiad.
