IPA Extensions

The Unicode block IPA Extensions ( IPA Extensions, U 0250 to U 02 AF) contains additional characters for the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Both contemporary and historical characters are included. Other characters are in the blocks Phonetic Extensions Phonetic Extensions and to find a supplement. The character known as " Diacritics " in the IPA table are diacritics in the blocks Spacing Modifier Letters and combining. Moreover, for all the signs which formally correspond to Latin letters (except ɡ ), used these letters, although this may in some fonts cause problems (eg if a vs. Ɑ, u vs. Ʊ ).

The possibility of using Unicode representation for the phonetic characters, makes older systems such as X- SAMPA or Kirshenbaum, based on the ASCII system gradually obsolete. In Unicode block some former IPA characters are included, which are no longer used.
