Itabuna

Itabuna is a city in the southeast of the Brazilian state of Bahia. It has 213 656 inhabitants ( 2009 estimate ) and is located 450 km south of Salvador. Itabuna is a relatively young city, was established in 1910 from a settlement founded in 1849. It is located in the interior, but only a short distance from the port city of Ilheus.

In contrast to the state capital, Salvador da Bahia, which is an internationally recognized business center, Itabuna is located in a rural area, who lives economically primarily from agriculture. Industrial installations are formed here rather weak. The cocoa and cotton, however, is a stable and reliable source of income due to the manufacturing industries in Salvador da Bahia. The service sector, however, learned in the last few decades a steady growth.

History

The settlement Itabuna began to expand in the last century because drover da Conquista used the area on their way to Vitória as a rallying point. The region is through the waterfall of the river Cachoeira ( German: "waterfall" ) severed.
