James Thompson Maffett

James Thompson Maffett ( born February 2, 1837 in Clarion, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, † December 19, 1912 ) was an American politician. From 1887 to 1889 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

James Maffett attended the common schools and the Rimersburg Academy and Jefferson College in Canonsburg. He then taught for a year as a teacher in the state of Missouri. In 1859, he moved into the Amador County in California, where he also worked as a teacher. He later began to study law, which he continued after his return to Pennsylvania in 1870. After his 1872 was admitted to the bar he began to work in his hometown of Clarion in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In 1884, he unsuccessfully sought the nomination of his party for the congressional elections of this year.

In the congressional elections of 1886 was Maffett but then in the 25th Election District of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Alexander Colwell White on March 4, 1887. Since he resigned in 1888 to further candidacy, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1889. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Maffett again practiced as a lawyer. He died on 19 December 1912 in his hometown of Clarion, where he was also buried.
