James van Riemsdyk

James van Riemsdyk ( born May 4, 1989 in Middletown, New Jersey ) is an American professional ice hockey player who plays in the position of left winger for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League since June 2012.

Career

Van Riemsdyk played during his high school days for the Christian Brothers Academy and the Brick Hockey Club, both of which were located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. For the season 2005/ 06 he joined the U.S. National Team Development Program of the American Hockey Association, where he held various junior national teams. This he took in 2006 at the U18 Junior World Cup finals. There, defeated the Americans, among others, with the later first selected in the NHL Entry Drafts 2006 and 2007, Erik Johnson and Patrick Kane, Finland in the final 3-1 and won the world title. The following year, van Riemsdyk played in both the World Championships for U18 Juniors, where he won the silver medal with his team-mate Colin Wilson shared the title of Topscorers, as well as in World Championship U20 Juniors, where he won the bronze medal.

In the summer of 2007, the winger then in the NHL Entry Draft in 2007 was available for the franchises of the National Hockey League and was selected right after his teammate Patrick Kane in second overall position of the Philadelphia Flyers. Van Riemsdyk was not taken by the Flyers under contract, after which he went to the University of New Hampshire. There he plays while studying for the university team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. At the end of 2007, he was re-appointed in the national squad for the Under-20 World Youth Championship 2008.
