Jean Cabanis

Jean Louis Cabanis ( born March 8, 1816 in Berlin, † February 20, 1906 in Berlin -Friedrich Hagen ) was a German ornithologist.

Life and work

Cabanis studied from 1835 to 1839 at the Friedrich- Wilhelms- University of Berlin. He then went to North America, from where he returned to Berlin in 1841 and a large collection of natural history artifacts brought back. After that, he was first employed by the Museum of Natural History. Later he became a director, succeeding Mr. Lichtenstein. For the Zoological Museum, he worked more than 50 years, from 1841 to 1892.

In 1853 he founded the Journal of Ornithology, whose editor, he was for 41 years. Then he was replaced by his son Anton Reichenow.

Tributes and remembrance

Some ornithologists named after Cabanis a taxon. This information includes:

  • The Cabanis- bunting ( Emberiza cabanisi ) ( Reichenow, 1875)
  • The Eastern Dark thicket panties ( Synallaxis cabanisi ) ( Berlepsch Lever & Kuhn, 1890)
  • The Cabanis- Tanager ( Tangara cabanisi ) ( Sclater, PL, 1868)
  • The Cabanis Bulbul ( Phyllastrephus cabanisi ) ( Sharpe, 1882)
  • The Long-tailed Shrike (Lanius cabanisi ) ( Hartert, 1906)
  • The Schwarzkopfspätzling ( Pseudonigrita cabanisi ) ( Fischer & Reichenow, 1884)
  • Cabanis- Thrush (Turdus plebejus ) Cabanis, 1861, at least in the trivial name
  • Cabanis- Weaver (Ploceus intermedius ) Rüppell, 1845
  • Subspecies of Cabanis- Weaver (Ploceus intermedius cabanisii ) ( Peters, WKH, 1868) exist in English for the trivial name Cabanis 's Masked Weaver.
  • Subspecies of the kinglet - warbler ( Basileuterus culicivorus cabanisi ) Berlepsch, 1879 exists for the English and the trivial name Cabanis 's Warbler.
  • Subspecies of spotted woodpecker ( Dendrocopos major cabanisi ) ( Malherbe, 1854)
  • Subspecies of Goldschnabelhopfs ( Rhinopomastus minor cabanisi ) ( Filippi, 1853)
  • Subspecies of squirrel cuckoo ( Piaya cayana cabanisi ) Allen, 1893
  • Subspecies of the Green Fisherman ( Chloroceryle americana cabanisii ) ( Tschudi, 1846)
  • Subspecies of the eye-streak - Schnäppertyranns ( Cnemotriccus fuscatus cabanisi ) ( Léotaud, 1866)
  • Subspecies of the Andean dark bully ( Knipolegus signatus cabanisi ) Schulz, 1882
  • Subspecies of the White-faced Bunting ( Melozone biarcuata cabanisi ) ( PL Sclater & Salvin, 1868)
  • Subspecies of Seidenkuhstärlings ( Molothrus bonariensis cabanisii ) Cassin, 1866
  • Subspecies of Rotbürzel - bunting finch ( Poospiza lateralis cabanisi ) Bonaparte, 1850
  • Subspecies of the Ochre -browed Blattspäher ( Syndactyla rufosuperciliata cabanisi ) ( Taczanowski, 1875)
  • Subspecies of Schalowturako ( Tauraco livingstonii cabanisi ) ( Reichenow, 1883)

The South American Classification Committee has, however, Poospiza cabanisi categorized as a separate species. Also there for some authors the opinion that Melozone cabanisi is a separate species. One finds in the literature Knipolegus cabanisi as a separate species, but the South American Classification Committee rejects this categorization so far from.

Descriptions

Cabanis described alone or with other authors a variety of Vogeltaxa scientifically. Together with Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte in 1850, he described the genus Stenostira. Also described in co-operation with Ferdinand Heine numerous genera, species and subspecies. The description of the subspecies of the Rainbow Lorikeet ( Trichoglossus haematodus flavicans ) goes back to working with Reichenow. But he has, inter alia, the types of forest Wren ( Henicorhina leucosticta ), shed coat - ant guard ( Hylophylax poecilinotus ) and eye ring - Melon-headed tyrant ( Rhynchocyclus brevirostris ) and the genera Poospiza, Baeolophus and Cichlopsis described.
