Jebsheim

Location

Jebsheim is located in the Upper Rhine Plain, approximately 12 kilometers north-east of Colmar; the distance to the eastern Rhine and the border with Germany is about six kilometers.

History

In Jebsheim there was already a settlement in Roman times, as roads crossed here. The first mention of the place 861 was under the Dukes of Württemberg, the Reformation was introduced here in 1535. In the Thirty Years' War Jebsheim suffered particularly. Jebsheim was also the headquarters of the older ( Protestant ) line of Berckheim ( nobility ) it. The family shared with the three sons of Egenolf ( Egenolph ) III. of Berckheim (1552-1629) and his wife Margaret of Lichtenfels in three strains. Wilhelm II († 1665) established the elderly ( Protestant ) line to Jebsheim, Hans Rudolph II, the middle line to Krautergersheim, and Egenolf IV († 1639 ), the younger ( Catholic ) line to Rappoltsweiler. The line to Krautergersheim extinct in the male line on 12 November 1787 the grandson of its founder, Samuel Francis, a French colonel, Stettmeister at Strasbourg, and rector of the university there. For the younger line, among others came the Baden State Minister Karl Christian von Berckheim ( 1774-1849 ).

Castle / Palace Berckheim have perished, traces can still be found in a glass painting of the fifteenth century in the north sacristy of the church of Saint -Martin and some preserved grave monuments of this family in the church.

Sad gained fame Jebsheim in January 1945, when there Allied troops and German Panzer Grenadiers - the latter under the command of Heinrich Himmler - fierce battles last delivered ( Poche de Colmar).

Ladies of Berckheim

The four sisters were in their youth as so-called " ladies of Berckheim " ( les demoiselles de Berckheim ) historically known literary circle, including the work of educators and poet Gottlieb Konrad Pfeffel ( 1736-1809 ). Antiquarian are still records to obtain it. Two of the four sisters were born in Jebsheim. They are:

  • Louise Sophie Octavie de Berckheim (1771-1852) married Frederic from stone to Nordheim

In honor of a member of Berckheimer noble family, a street was named in Jebsheim " rue Baron Berckheim "

Former railway station Jebsheim

Before the First World War was an overland tram about 22 km above Colmar Horbourg- Wihr, Muntzenheim, Jebsheim and Else Home Marckolsheim ( tram connection Strasbourg - Erstein - Markolsheim ). Due to the planned expansion of its highways no more relics are present. Lately reminds Marckolsheim a tram form in flower shape to this path.
