John Corvinus

John Corvinus (also Jonannes Corvinus, Hungarian János Corvin, Czech Jánoš Korvin, croatian Ivaniš Korvin; * April 2, 1473 in Buda, † October 12, 1504 in Krapina ) was Count Hunyadi, Ban of Croatia and Slavonia and Duke of Slavonia, Opava, Leobschutz, Glogau and Liptau.

Origin and family

Johann came from an illegitimate relationship of Hungarian and Bohemian (counter ) King Matthias Corvinus with civil daughter Barbara Edelpöck († March 9, 1495 ) from stone / Danube. He was the only descendant, as his two marriages were childless.

1496, Johann married to the then sixteen -year-old Croatian nobles Beatrice de Frangepan ( 1480-1510 ). The couple had children

  • Elisabeth (1496-1508) and
  • Christoph (1499-1505), with which the house Hunyadi Corvinus became extinct in the male line.

Life

After King Matthias Corvinus tried in vain to secure the succession as king of Hungary for his single, but extramarital son, John, he gave him other influential positions and areas. 1481 he appointed the then eight- year-old Johann Earl of Hunyadi and Duke of Liptau. Already in 1477, before the Peace of Olomouc, Matthias, Johann intention to transfer the duchy of Glogau, which was a fief of the crown of Bohemia since 1331. Because of Glogau succession dispute he was able to realize this plan only in 1488 after the deposition of Duke John II.

After the death of the Duke Przemislaus III. 1484 appropriated to Matthias the Duchy Tost and the Duchy of Opava in 1485, which had to issue against some castles in Slavonia him Viktorin of Podiebrad in exchange. Both he transferred to his son Johann.
