John I, Count of Ponthieu

John I († June 30, 1191 at Acre ) was a Count of Ponthieu out of the house Montgomery. He was a son of Count Guido II of Ponthieu († 1147 ) and his wife Ida.

John borrowed his coat of arms of the Dukes of Burgundy, with whom he was related through his paternal grandmother.

Immediately after he took the inheritance, he began a feud with Bernard III. Saint -Valery. The war ended in 1150 but was under pressure from King Louis VII of France. In 1168 some of his castles were sacked by Henry II Plantagenet, because John had denied him the passage of his troops. In return, Johann 1173 supported the rebellion of the young King Henry against his father.

Johann took in the aftermath of King Philip II in the Third Crusade, where he died at the siege of Acre.

He was married three times. His third wife was Beatrice of Saint-Pol, a daughter of Count Anselme Saint-Pol. Their children were:

  • Adela ( † after 1241 ), ∞ with Thomas de Saint -Valery
  • William IV († October 6, 1221 ), Count of Ponthieu
  • Margaret, ∞ with Enguerrand de Picquigny, Vidame of Amiens
