Jorge Garbajosa
Jorge Joaquín Garbajosa Chaparro [' xoɾxe gaɾβa'xosa ] ( born December 19, 1977 in Torrejón de Henares, Madrid ) is a former Spanish professional basketball player. He is 2.06 m tall and played on the position of the small or power forwards.
Career
Clubs
Garbajosa began his career with Juventud Alcalá, an association of Alcalá de Henares. At the age of 16, he moved to the youth department of Taugrés. In the Basque club tradition he celebrated, 9 December 1995 his debut in the first team, in a league match against CB Peñas Huesca. Already in his first season succeeded Garbajosa winning the European Cup Winners' Cup, in 1998/99 followed the success of the Spanish Cup. In summer 2000, he joined the Italian Lega Basket Serie A Benetton Treviso, with which he succeeded in two wins each in the championship (2001/ 02, 2002/ 03) at the Cup (2003, 2004) and the Super Cup (2001, 2002). He also reached the final with his club the ULEB Euro League 2002/ 03. After four years abroad, he moved Garbajosa back to his home, where he wrote for Unicaja Málaga. The Andalusians as he led to victory in the Spanish Cup MVP 2004/ 05 and a year later, finally, for the first title in the Spanish championship, where he was named most valuable player of the finals series.
In 2006 he made the jump to the NBA. The Toronto Raptors Jose Calderon after he was already the second Spanish newcomer within one year.
On 26 March 2007, Garbajosa pulled in a game against the Boston Celtics in serious injury to the left ankle, including a broken fibula. Nevertheless, he was elected to the national team of the best rookies of the season, the NBA All- Rookie First Team. At the beginning of the following season, he had to have surgery a second time, so this was completed in only seven games for him. The leadership of the Raptors accused him of having too soon resumed the operation of gambling in order to participate for Spain at the 2007 European Championship can, and have thus made the second operation too late to leave. He returned before the end of his contract back to Europe and signed in July 2008 BK Khimki. With this club reached the final of Euro 2009 Garbajosa cups. After a year in Russia, he moved to his home to Real Madrid. After one and a half seasons with the Spanish giants, he received in January 2011 from his club release. On 14 March 2011, he moved on to league rivals Unicaja Málaga, where he had played from 2004 to 2006. In his debut five days later he was instrumental in the dramatic victory over his former team involved ( 69:68 after extra time ). After a disappointing 2011/12 season, in which his club missed the championship in ninth place of the basic passage to qualify for the play-off, Jorge Garbajosa declared in June 2012, at the age of 34 years, his retirement from basketball and joined the coaching staff of the Spanish Basketball Federation.
Spanish national team
Garbajosa participated with the Spanish national basketball team at the Summer Olympic Games in 2000 and 2004. He also won the 2001 bronze and 2003 silver at the European Championships.
He reached his greatest success with the title at the 2006 World Cup in Japan. In the final Garbajosa scored 20 points and 10 rebounds and was thus instrumental in the 70:47 win against Greece. In addition, he was elected to the national team of the best players of the tournament.
For the 2007 European Championship on home soil Garbajosa threatened by the drawn in March of the year of injury to fail. However, it was before the European Championship reached on the day an agreement with the Raptors, so he was appointed instead Jordi Trias in the Spanish squad. The Spanish team won the silver medal in the European Championship tournament. Also for the 2008 Olympic Games was Garbajosa in the squad, the Spaniard and reached the finals.
At the European Championships in Poland in 2009 he won the gold medal with Spain.
In June 2011 Garbajosa announced his retirement from the national team.
