José Luis Clerc

José Luis Clerc ( born August 16, 1958 in Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentine tennis player. In his home country he is considered one of the most successful Argentine player of the local tennis history.

Achievements

As a right-handed changed Clerc turned professional in 1977 and won 27 ATP titles. In 1988, he retired as an active player. His best finish in the world rankings was the 4th place on 3 August 1981. Subsequently, he had a run and reached 27 wins and 4 titles in a month. In the world rankings, he finished at the end of 1980, the eighth, the fifth in 1981, 1982 and 1983, the sixth to eighth place.

Between 1976 and 1989, Clerc represented Argentina in the Davis Cup, partly together with his teammate Guillermo Vilas. 1981 in the final against the USA ( Full 1:3 ) Although he defeated Roscoe Tanner, but lost the second singles match against John McEnroe after he had already lost the double with Vilas against Fleming / McEnroe.

Together with Vilas and Carlos Gattiker he won with Argentina in 1980 World Team Cup in the final against Italy 3-0 in Buenos Aires. Clerc runs a tennis school in Argentina, attends Senior tournaments, and works as a television commentator (2008).
