Juan Landázuri Ricketts

Juan Cardinal Landázuri Ricketts, OFM (born 19 December 1913 in Arequipa, Peru, † January 16, 1997 in Lima) was Archbishop of Lima.

Life

Juan Landázuri Ricketts joined the Franciscan order and studied the subjects of Catholic theology and philosophy. On April 6, 1939, he received the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked until 1943 as a lecturer at various schools of the Franciscans in Peru. From 1943 to 1946 he worked as a secretary in the administration of his order. After further studies he taught theology at the seminary of the Franciscans in the Peruvian Ocopa. In 1951 he was Definitor General of his Order.

1952 Pope Pius XII appointed him. Titular Archbishop of Rhoina and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Lima, whose leadership Juan Landázuri Ricketts took over in 1955. He received his episcopal consecration Juan Gualberto Guevara Cardinal, Archbishop of Lima.

He was inducted in 1962 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli in the College of Cardinals and was a participant in the Second Vatican Council. In various ceremonies he acted as papal legate to the Pope.

In 1986 he founded, together with the Archbishop of Freiburg, Oskar Saier the partnership of the Archdiocese of Freiburg with the Church in Peru, which until now 150 communities and organizations together.

His age-related resignation was accepted by Pope John Paul II in 1993. He died on January 16, 1997 in Lima and was buried in the local cathedral.
