Júlio César grew up in the slums of his native city of Bauru. From there he came in 1979 to the then reigning national champion Guarani FC. With the team from Campinas he landed first two times on the 16th place and thus ultimately descended. But after just one season in Série B and failed to promotion back to the Série A. He was promptly third with Guarani, but after the departure of Careca the team again had the transition to the second league start. There, finally succeeded again the direct promotion back to the Premier League, in the Guarani consequently only reached the 15th place. In César's last season played in the upper half of the table and reached at the end of the season - despite César's departure in the summer - the final of the Brazilian Championship, which was lost on penalties against FC São Paulo. During the 1986 World Cup, some European clubs were aware of him and he was obliged to start of season 1986 by Stade Brest in France. There he formed the central defense together with the Argentine world champion Jose Luis Brown and was with Brest eighth Division 1 next season changed to César within the League newly promoted Montpellier HSC.

HSC Montpellier (1987-1990)

In Montpellier, César was set from the beginning, and together with Franck Lucchesi, Nenad Stojkovic and Pascal Baills the back four. The team first started out weak in the 1987/88 season, but increased in the course more and more and ultimately was third. César missed only one game and scored in league and cup six times. Through the league placement from the previous season Montpellier was allowed to participate in the UEFA Cup and met in the first round to Benfica. After return game, the French were defeated with 1:6, however. As a result, it was worse than the year before and was ninth in the final standings Montpellier in the league. The Brazilian precipitated out twelve times and had to contend with changing partners in central defense. The 1989/90 season was his last in the south of France and was equally disappointing as last year in the league. Despite new additions such as Daniel Xuereb or Éric Cantona the team was only thirteenth in the league. César, which ran aground this season in central defense alongside captain Laurent Blanc, though played more frequently and also scored three goals, was the steady downward trend of the club in the league but not prevent it. The team was very successful for the Cup and won it after extension in the final against RC Paris 2-1.

Juventus (1990-1994)

As Juventus after the World Cup 1990 squad reinforced for much money was - also brought in the Piedmontese capital Júlio César - alongside former stars like Roberto Baggio and Thomas Hassler. But in spite of such a millionaire ensemble Juve was only seventh in Serie A and thus missed even qualify for an international competition. This would Turin still able to reach the European Cup winners by winning, but there failed the team in the semifinals at FC Barcelona. In the new season Turin continued to invest huge sums of money and committed to Giovanni Trapattoni also a new coach. Under the direction Trapattoni was the team runner-up behind AC Milan and returned after a year's break in the international competition. In the UEFA Cup the following season the team moved to just one defeat in ten games to the final. The final opponent was César future employer Borussia Dortmund. Against this came in the first leg, the Turin relatively quickly in arrears, but then were able to turn the game around and won - after she had also won the return leg - the UEFA Cup. In the league, however, the old lady was only fourth in the final table and had to leave AC Milan for the umpteenth time the Scudetto. The following season should be César's last in Turin; this time he missed with Juventus as league runners winning the Italian championship scarce. After the season, he joined together with Andreas Möller to Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund (1994-1998)

Due to initial difficulties César his debut for Borussia was only on Matchday 5 of the 1994/95 season in the match against Bayer Leverkusen. After that, he missed only one game due to suspension and formed otherwise long stretches of the season along with Bodo Schmidt and the Libero Matthias Sammer, the Dortmund back line. They defended the Dortmund goal quite successfully and collected a total of 33 goals conceded the fewest in the league. In the final table ranked Dortmund - with one point ahead of Werder Bremen - on the first place and César won its first national championship. Internationally, it went well for BVB, which failed to Juventus in the UEFA Cup until the semi-finals. As defending champion, he experienced the following season with BVB initially a rather rocky start, but with time started the team and was Bayern Munich before the fall of champion. César had also with Jürgen Kohler - who had played with him at Juve - Bodo Schmidt instead of a new defender at his side. With Kohler and Cesar in central defense, although Borussia got more goals than the previous season, but was nevertheless already at the 33rd Round for the second consecutive German masters. During the season, César played with the BVB his first season in the Champions League and failed here in the quarter- finals at last year's winners Ajax Amsterdam. The following year, however, he was more successful with Borussia in the premier class and reached after victories against AJ Auxerre and Manchester United the final in Munich. The sold-out Olympic Stadium, the team met for the fifth time in three years at Juventus. The final was won by BVB despite the absence of César 3-1. But Cesar was missing not only in the final against Torino, but came to a total of fewer and fewer appearances for BVB. That's why he was after Nevio Scala took over as coach, borrowed abroad and then came again for Borussia return, but resigned sporty no longer large in appearance.

End of career (1998-2001)

In between César was loaned to Brazil for Botafogo FR and from Greece to Panathinaikos Athens. After that he went to Werder Bremen, which urgently needed a central defender by a long injury problems. On the Weser River, he signed a one-year performance-based contract and consequently ran twelve times for Werder on. The following year, he finished his career at Rio Branco EC in Brazil.

In the National Team

Without further selection games directly, he was appointed to the squad for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. As a regular player was with the Brazilians group winners and thus played in the second round against Poland. The Eastern Europeans were defeated 4-0 and it was followed by the quarter-final against France. In this game it was after regular time and extra time expired 1:1.
