Julius Epstein (Pianist)

Julius Epstein ( born August 7, 1832 in Zagreb / Zagreb, Croatia; † March 3, 1926 in Vienna ) was an Austro- Hungarian Jewish pianist.

Life

In Zagreb he was a student of the local choral conductors Vatroslav light Egger, in Vienna, he studied composition with Johann Rufinatscha and piano with Anton Halm. He debuted in 1852 and soon became one of the most famous pianist and piano teacher in Vienna.

From 1867 to 1901 he was Professor at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna. Among his pupils were Ignaz howler, Marcella Sembrich, Gustav Mahler and Mathilde Kralik of Meyrswalden.

Epstein was among other clavier sonatas of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Schubert Sämmtliche Clavierwerke Critical Revised collected edition out.

His two daughters Rudolfine ( cellist ) and Eugenie ( violinist ) made ​​from 1876 to 1877 a very successful tour through Germany and Austria. His son Richard ( * January 26, 1869 Vienna, † August 1, 1919 in New York, NY) was also a professor of piano at the Vienna Conservatory.
