Julius Francis, Duke of Saxe-Lauenburg

Julius Franz of Saxe- Lauenburg (* September 16, 1641 in Prague, † September 30, 1689 in Imperial City ) from 1666 to 1689 was the last Duke of Saxe- Lauenburg.

Life

Julius Francis was the youngest son of the Duke Julius Henry of Saxe-Lauenburg (1586-1665) from his third wife, Anna Magdalena († 1668), daughter of Wilhelm Popel of Lobkowicz barons. The prince was educated in the Catholic faith.

He was 1666 Duke of Saxe- Lauenburg By the early death of his elder half-brother Franz Erdmann. He was able to trigger the centuries pledged to Lübeck city Mölln and other lands. Julius Francis lived after the death of his mother mainly on their estates in Bohemia. On November 20, In 1665 he bought the manor Kupferberg. He founded in 1687 as the Duke a glassworks in Juliustal.

Julius Franz brought it in the imperial service to the Field Marshal. On March 6, 1682, he founded in Bohemia, his regiment, the "Sachsen -Lauenburg - Cürassiere " 1683 and took part in the Relief of Vienna.

After his death it came to inheritance disputes. Shortly before his death he had placed his daughters under the protection of the Emperor Leopold I.. Although the female succession in Saxe-Lauenburg was introduced, the emperor sequestered the country, and the daughters remained only their estates in Bohemia. The two sisters came to her aunt after castle imperial city. Julius Franz was the last Duke of Lauenburg from the family of Ascanians. With him the line of Saxe- Lauenburg - Ratzeburg died out, the title went to Guelph in Braunschweig.

The Saxony- Lauenburg castle headquarters Schlackenwerth was later inherited by Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden.
