Kaarlo Castrén

Kaarlo Castrén ( born February 28, 1860 in Turtola, † November 19, 1938 in Helsinki) was a Finnish banking expert, politician and Prime Minister.

Study and career

Castrén was born in 1860 when Karl Castrén in Lapland, the son of the pastor Johan Robert Castrén and his wife Ida Maria Susanna divers. Castrén holds a degree in Law, from which he graduated in 1887 with a Bachelor of Laws. Subsequently, he was from 1888 to 1892 official in the Department of Finance, Senate Department. He was also from 1888 to 1898 lawyer at Castrén & Snellman. From 1892 to 1904 he was a member of the Board of Kansallis - Osake bank. In 1909 he founded his own law firm in 1916 and also director of Kansallis - Osake - Pankki.

Political career

Castrén began his political career in 1894 with his election to the parliament, to which he also belonged from 1905 to 1906. From 1908 to 1909 he was first Senator for Civil Affairs in the then Senate of the Grand Duchy.

After independence, he joined the National Progressive Party ( CEP ) and was from November 1918 to April 1919 Minister of Finance in the first cabinet of Lauri Ingman. This he followed on 17 April 1919 at the Office of the Prime Minister. After his cabinet had submitted a proposal for the formation of future republican government, it came back on August 15, 1919.
