Kaingang people

The Kaingang (also Kaingange, Caingange or similar) are an indigenous people in southern Brazil. The people today comprises almost 29,000 people, making it one of the five largest indigenous peoples of Brazil.

The Kaingang live in a total of 30 isolated settlements that are distributed across the four states of São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The number of inhabitants of each settlement areas varies from fifteen to 6,100. In a further seven areas claim is made.

The language of the Kaingang counts together with the language of Xokleng to the southern Gê languages. The remaining Gê languages ​​that belong to the family of languages ​​Macro Gê be much further north, talked about in Mato Grosso or Pará. Among the peoples of the gêsprachigen Kaingang are the greatest people and represent approximately half of the speaker.
