Keokuk County, Iowa

The Keokuk County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010 had 10,511 inhabitants, the county and a population density of 7 people per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sigourney.

The County is located in the central southeastern part of Iowa, is in the south about 70 miles from Missouri, in the east is from about 80 km from Illinois and has an area of 1,502 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Keokuk County in 1837 from parts of the former Washington County in the former Wisconsin - formed territory. It was named after Keokuk (1767-1848), a chief chief of the Sac Indians, who advocated peace with the white settlers in the Black Hawk War.

In May 1843 County was officially approved for settlement by white immigrants and managed from 1844 itself. Previously, it was under the administration of Washington County. After a number of years to become permanent struggle for the privilege of district capital, it was founded in 1856 Sigourney.
