Kirchberg, St. Gallen

Bazenheid

Kirchberg is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen. It is located in the constituency of Toggenburg.

Apart from the main town of the same name also includes the villages of Bazenheid an der Thur, Gähwil, Dietschwil, Müselbach, Schalkhausen, Oetwil, Rupperswil, Nuetenwil, Lamperswil and Stelz to the community. The place has both a Catholic and a Protestant church.

The neighboring municipalities are Rickenbach TG, TG Wilen, Sirnach, Fischingen, Mosnang, Lutisburg and Jonschwil.

History

A possible Iron Age fortification is Unterbazenheid. 745 the surrounding hamlets were first mentioned in 1222 came also the name Kilchberc on for the first time. In the Middle Ages, the great majority of the population was part of the Abbey of St. Gall, partly the Counts of Toggenburg hearing. The area contains 17 ruins and castle sites, including the fortress of Alt - Toggenburg ( Iddaburg ) at Gähwil. 1468 went the whole municipal territory by purchase via the Abbey of. 1831, the district Alttoggenburg was formed, one of the Kirchberg with three other communities. As part of the Wil region experienced Kirchberg since 1960 a new economic boom. Conversely, the number of farms has since declined from about 400 to 170. Nevertheless, Kirchberg still has the largest livestock in the canton of St. Gallen.

Traffic

The municipality is situated on the train line Wil - Wattwil and is also covered by bus routes. In 2006, the avoidance of Bazenheid was completed. The municipality borders directly on the feeder road of the A1 in Wil.

In Bazenheid there since 1984, an incinerator on the Association Abfallverwertung Bazenheid (ZAB ). The 1992 built 95 meter high chimney of the plant was the highest chimney in the canton of St. Gallen. He was replaced by a new, yet only 50 meters high chimney in 2009
